Tracheal intubation

Indications

Ensure airway patency

  • Prolonged operations
  • Difficult access to airway
  • Excessive movement of head and neck
  • Difficulty achieving clear airway with laryngeal mask airway
  • Situations where a major intraoperative complication occurs (haemorrhage, malignant hyperthermia)

Protect airway from aspiration

  • Risk of regurgitation
  • Extensive bleeding
