Created: 22/5/2007

Paper type

Multi-centre randomised controlled trial

The SAFE study investigators.
A comparison of albumin and saline for fluid resuscitation in the intensive care unit.
N Engl J Med 2004 350:2247-56

Major Finding

The use of either 4% albumin or normal saline for fluid resuscitation for ICU patients results in similar outcomes at 28 days

Point for discussion:

SAFE but is it better? How important is the post hoc analysis in dictating the use of albumin in both head injuried and septic patients?
